1 Did you know that in England...

...on last 10th-11th July was held the first European BRM 24H Race!

Unfortunately I was unable to speak about it first, because I had not any pictures and useful information to tell the Event.

I write Event with the “E” capitalized, because also myself that travel all around the world to see and participate in BRM competitions, I’ve been very impressed about this Race, its organization and its fantastic location in one of the most famous Museums dedicated to cars and motor vehicles in general:

The Haynes International Motor Museum, in Somerset, UK

All the credit goes to our UK distributor Pendle Slot Racing, which despite the 1:24 scale isn't so common in England, made every effort to organize this event.

The race was held on Ninco track (! - You read correct!) of these features:

One of the ingredients that have made the event a success was the simplicity of the technical regulation applied:

-           At the subscription, the Team was provided with a white body kit and a chassis, in order to allow everyone to decorate their model, and install a lighting system.

-          On the morning of the race was given all remaining part of the car, instructions, spare parts and consumables for the race:

o   T-RS Motor (purple label9, to be used in option to the standard T-027

o   4 sets of 22 shore rear tire (soft)

o    6 sets of 30 shore rear tires (standard)

o   1 set of front tires with lowered profile

o   2 Nylon crown gears – 1x34T 1x36T

o   1 guide blade with Ninco profile

To each team was handed a box containing everything needed. Immediately began assembly and tuning operation of models

To note the great fair-play that has characterized the entire race. No one who fakes engines or “adequate” models to different driving styles... practically, the role of Technical Scrutinisers was almost a pastime...

And here are the models who participated:

The Porsche of Pendle Slot Racing Team

The Toyota of Molesey Team

The Porsche of the “Guests” Team NSCC (I was part of)

The Toyota of Pinewood Raceway Team

The Toyota of HPSCC Team

The Porsche of North Staffs Team

All the teams who participated had no knowledge of these 1:24 Slot Car models Slot with plastic chassis. During the free-practice all have been able to discover these cars, many of them felt for the first time. All have found a good feeling and have appreciated the behavior and driveability.

See them on track was a real pleasure!

Even at night!

Note the recovery in progress...

The race was fantastic. No technical interruption, breaks only for the usual lane changes (every 55 minutes!) And cars had no problem at all!

The only technical operations were to replace contact braids (1 time) and the rear tires.

With the 22 shore it was possible to go 2 stints of 55 minutes, whereas with the standard, although not performing like the first, stints were almost 5.

And here are the final standings!

And the winners!

The Pinewood Raceway!

5,146 laps = 247.008 km

Good second place for the Pendle Slot Racing

4,903 laps = 235.344 km

Third place for Molesey Team

4,831 laps = 231.888 km

The fourth was North Staffs

4,817 laps = 231.216 km

Fifth the HPSCC

4,811 laps = 230.928 km

And finally the team “Guests Team” NTCC, represented here by one of the competitors

...and what remains of the cars (that I drove for 3 stints, including 2 in night-time with only 1 headlight!)

They all stood out very well, despite accidents were not missed...

Just think: in addition to having already confirmed that this is only the 1st edition of this Endurance Race, it’s already born a championship!

By the way: what better occasion than this to present new BRM creatures!

3 BRM 1:24 6 Hours of Salzburg, Austria

Immediately after the successful BRM 1:24 Endurance Race held in Soragna on 12 and 13 July, the second edition of the 6 Hours of Salzburg took place on Saturday 19 July 2008.

The race format is of No. 8 rounds of 45 minutes each - just like a real Endurance race! - on two different 4-lanes Carrera tracks: a very technical one (the permanent circuit of the Slot Club)...

...and a particularly fast one, specially assembled for the event.

The 8 participating teams made it possible to concentrate the event into a one day race with the following schedule:

08.00 - 12.30 Free practice, with a breakfast offered by Club.
12.30 - 13.15 Technical verification and lunch offered by the Club.
13.30 - 20.15 Race Driving turns drawn by lot, without qualifications - to save time.

For time reasons, the duration of the competition was reduced to 8 runs in 40 minutes, for a total of 5 hours and 20 minutes of actual race.

The organizing Club, Grenzlandslot of Köppl - Salzburg, was unable to attend the recent race of Soragna, but followed with great interest the Italian event and decided to use the same type of sponge tires. They usually use BRM 15 shore compound rubber tires, judged too soft for summer racing.

It almost looks like I was forced to "adjust" the weight of my IMSA/Jäger to challenge the best teams…

The average weight of the cars was around 220 grams, as opposed to the 200 to 205 grams of the cars that raced in Soragna.

Moreover, the standard motor BRM T-027 that was used provides around 1,500 rpm. more, but has less torque and braking power than the BRM T-RS.

The tires adopted were the same: front tires "minimal", posterior of 27 mm, with guide blade without shims.

Gentlemen, start your engines!

The drivers raced for 40 minutes without any pause (bridging was prohibited…). It was simply exciting!

Some teams even had drivers race for two rounds consecutively: a real massacre for their fingers...

The following pictures gives a good idea of how the cars were driven over the grip limit for the entire race.

As I mentioned, the T-027 motor has less braking power than the T-RS. Therefore, driving these Porsche 's - faster and heavier than those used in Soragna - was a little more complicated, but all the same reeeally enjoyable!

In short, it was fun!

Erik Schönberger, owner of the fast track and the event organizer along with Hans Steininger, managed to finish 4th with his Porsche 962C, after losing a lot of time in the first heat for set-up problems. He practicallyhad to re-build the chassis.

His Porsche 962C - in the picture - and our IMSA/Jäger were the only two cars with a custom livery.

The BRM International team, represented by Roberto (BRM), Francesco (BRM), Alex (Grenzlandslot) and Herbert (Grenzlandslot) was 3rd in mid-race. It then suffered from a guide blade damage due to excessive wear and lost about 40 laps for its replacement.

The winners: MH-Racing Team with 1,869.91 laps, amounting to 60,510.39 m.

This very successful event, that took place on a very "standard" surface - a Carrera track, proves that it is possible to organize endurance races without necessarily having at one's disposal "super-tracks" such as that of Soragna. Also the format of using two different tracks with opposite characteristics proved to be a winning choice.

It looks like the BRM 1:24 6 Hours of Salzburg is becoming a classic. The 3rd edition will likely take place around the end of December 2008 or in mid January 2009.

See you at the next race!
